Benedikt Hartl studied architecture at the Technical University Munich, at the School of Architecture and Design in Oslo and at Ardhi University in Dar Es Salaam. He worked in various architecture firms in Paris, Zurich and Munich. From 2013-2015 he taught at the Department of Architectural Design at TU Munich. 

Since 2014 he has been teaching an assignment at the University of Applied Sciences Weihenstephan-Triesdorf for drawing methodology at the Chair of Visualization. In 2016 he published the architecture book Reminiscence, which is a collection of the most important influences on contemporary architecture.

In 2017 he founded an (opposite) architecture office in Munich. Opposite Office is an award-winning studio which works between reality and fiction. Opposite Office is one of the few politically motivated architectural firms, internationally known mainly through the refurbishment project of Buckingham Palace into social housing. Benedikt Hartl is often referred to as an activist architect.
